How To Change Your Life By Making Your Bed Everyday

The other day, I heard my mom tell one of my brothers, "If you want to change your life, make your bed everyday." Turns out, she wasn't the genius behind that quote, but she has always pressed us to make our beds every morning. That quote was said by Admiral William H. McRaven, and it's actually one of the best pieces of life-advice anyone could ever give you.

I'm not sure about you, but typically my bed is the first thing I address when my room needs to look a little more put-together. I made my bed this morning and literally said out loud, "Ok, that took all of 45 seconds." (And I have exactly twelve pillows on my bed. TWELVE. Who needs that many pillows?!) If I can do it, so can you. I'm just going to be honest with you, there are days I come home and it's just been an all-around crappy day, and my bed isn't made -- and even though that was completely my fault, I'm just like "Seriously. If my bed was made, this day would be so much better.

This is the reason why making your bed will change your life, according to Admiral McRaven:

If you want to change the world, start off by making your bed. If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another. By the end of the day, that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed. Making your bed will also reinforce the fact that little things in life matter. If you can’t do the little things right, you’ll never be able to do the big things right. If, by chance, you have a miserable day, you will come home to a bed that’s made. That you made. And a made bed gives you encouragement that tomorrow will be better.

I think he said it perfectly when he said "It will give you a small sense of pride." See, it's not really the act of making your bed everyday that is all of a sudden going to make your world perfect and your troubles fall away, but it does something to you mentally. You ever go through a bad breakup and decide one day you're just not going to be sad anymore, and this sense of like "Heck yeah, girl power!" comes over you? Yeah. I feel like it's the same thing. You start paying attention to more of the little details, you hold your head a little higher, and you develop a sense of confidence.

Making your bed is just one small thing, one part of your morning routine that you can do every single day, to change your life. It's one tiny thing that will help you mentally and yes, even emotionally. Think I sound crazy? Think it sounds too good to be true? Try it. For one week. Wake up two minutes earlier and make your bed. See what it does to you as a person.

(Side note: it also helps to have some bedding pieces you don't actually mind looking at...)

Here are some pieces I've had my eye on! Click-through to purchase.

This one from Anthropologie is on sale!

I hope you enjoyed reading this little snippet of encouragement! Are you someone who makes your bed everyday? If so, how has it improved your life? I'd love to hear in the comment section below!
